Canon G9 Experimentation
It could be my middle age-ness or it could be an actual truth, but for some reason I feel like the digital cameras of generations past are still viable today in 2023. Could it be nostalgia? Or could it be that these forgotten cameras actually still hold value and produce great photos when stacked up against those produced by a more modern camera, a smartphone, or even A.I.?
There are a few posts out there that celebrate older point-and-shoots but what really inspired me to go down this rabbit hole was a video by George Holden about custom color presets on the Canon Powershot G9 that resemble a popular Fujifilm camera. I happen to have access to a person (my wife) who has a G9 and thought I'd revisit this old camera with this new perspective to see what I could come up with.
Here are some recent photos from the G9 that were a pleasure to shoot. I tried to capture everything in camera and not edit the photos too much in Photoshop. No cloning or touching-up of pixels aside from enhancing contrast, color balance, or cropping where appropriate. Just imagine a workflow from about 15 years ago. Probably won't win any awards with these but that's not the the point.
The point was just to get out (or stay in) and shoot some images like we did in the good ol' days. I won't steal George's YouTube mojo and copy/paste his presets here; you'll have to watch his video to find those out. But I created my custom color profile based on the presets, cranked up the ISO (because... who cares, right?) and began snapping away with my wonderful little brick of a camera.
Coffee Time
Most afternoons I partake in the ritual of making myself a small espresso with a little bit of coffee cake. I'm definitely keeping Hostess Cakes in business. Healthy? Probably not. But comforting? Certainly so! I enjoy the process of making the coffee as much as drinking it.
Afternoon Walk in the Woods
I enjoy getting out on my lunch breaks when I can. This summer, I've been dealing with an injury so I haven't been able to get out as much as I would have liked but I recently forced myself outside. Even if I wasn't covering much ground, I still found it refreshing to get out into nature. I've lost sight of how important this time is and I definitely want to get back into the habit; especially this fall.
Downtown Photo Hunt
I had a lunch date with my wife recently and she agreed to walk around downtown Roanoke with me as I snapped photos. It was a fun little side trip that I hope to do more often.
Stay tuned for more photo related posts as I reacquaint myself with my older cameras. After this initial experiment, I can definitely conclude that the process of shooting with an older point-and-shoot is definitely more rewarding than that of shooting with a more modern DSLR and even a smartphone.
